Chef Shangri-La on W 26th Street in North Riverside is a curious mix of Chinese restaurant, tiki bar, and catering service, blending distinct vibes into one spot. The moment you step inside, the décor feels deliberately imperfect—part casual neighborhood diner, part tiki lounge—giving off a relaxed, unpolished charm that locals seem to appreciate. It’s not the place for a quiet date night, but rather for group dinners or casual outings where a lively, sometimes bustling energy is welcome.

The menu offers more than your standard Chinese fare, with standouts like the Orange Chicken, Singapore Noodles, and Shrimp Fried Rice, alongside tiki-inspired cocktails with Mai Tais that seem to carry a bit of a punch. Locals often mention the combination plates, including their sweet and slightly spicy mango sauces covering battered beef or chicken, which feel both inventive and familiar, hinting at flavors that are playful yet grounded. If you arrive around mid-afternoon on a weekday, you might find the place comfortably quiet to enjoy the food without a rush.

The atmosphere fluctuates depending on timing. On quieter afternoons, you can settle into a booth with a good book or chat quietly, while Sunday nights might bring in live music, giving the room a festive feel without being overwhelming. Families, small groups, and regular neighborhood diners frequent the spot, and the staff’s easy patience—especially on hectic family visits—adds to the approachable vibe here.

This isn’t a spot for fine dining or polished ambiance; it’s more about familiar, hearty dishes served with enough personality and a hint of tiki bar flair to spark casual conversations. If you’re in the area looking for solid Chinese food with a side of island-inspired drinks and a mix of low-key entertainment, Chef Shangri-La fits that niche well, especially for those who appreciate a place rooted in local flavor and community rhythm rather than upscale presentation.

1st time here and everything was delicious. We ordered Mongolian Beef, Mango Shrimp, Egg rolls, Won Ron soup and The Mai Tai... That Mai Tai hit me good. After 1 drink I was feeling it. Recommended

I love everything about this place. The decor is perfectly imperfect. Great efficient service. The food was solid and nostalgic of the Chinese food from my childhood.

First time there. Went with my family (my brother, sister-in-law, and nieces) so I'm not used to having to deal with kids, and it was a bit hectic when we got there. The waitress was really nice and patience. She saw that we needed to get ourselves together, to look at the menu and decide. The food was great, and big portions. Will definitely be back.

I got the Tahitian Mango Passion Chicken. The description on the menu says “slightly spicy”, it was not spicy at all. It lacked flavor. I should have stuck to the orange chicken. The fried rice was good. My husband got the chicken and broccoli stir fry. The chicken looked like it had no flavor at all but my husband said it was good. The restaurant has a Hawaiian theme to it. The bar area doesn’t have much lighting. The service was good.

This place is awesome, the food is pretty good, but most importantly, they do shows with impersonators. The show I saw was Elvis, and it was really good. There's many others. The place has a old school early 80s vibe. Definitely worth trying
